The
District
Grand
Lodge
of
Carpentaria
draws
its
Officers
from
its
membership,
those
willing
to
further
their
learning
and
making good men better.
First District Grand Master of the District Grand Lodge of Carpentaria.
William Henry Johnson Mayers, was initiated in 1889 in Comet Lodge No.1680 EC.
As
the
railway
construction
progressed
further
west
in
Central
Queensland,
the
Comet
Lodge
building
relocated
from
Dingo
Creek
in
1878
to
Cometville,
Emerald,
Bogantungan,
Pine
Hill,
Jericho,
and finally to Barcaldine in 1886.
In
1902,
the
R.W.
Deputy
Grand
Master,
Sir
Augustus
Gregory,
appointed
him
District
Senior
Grand
Deacon.
In
1903,
Wor
Bro
Mayers
came
to
Cairns
and
joined
Gregory
Lodge,
serving
as
Director
of
Ceremonies and Treasurer for several years.
He
was
a
foundation
member
of
Chillagoe
Lodge
No.166,
Pyramid
Lodge
No.161,and
foundation
Junior
Warden
of
Carpentaria
Lodge
No.202,
in
which
he
has
served
every
office.
He
remained
a
member of Carpentaria Lodge until his death.
In
1912,
the
District
Grand
Master.,
R.W.
Bro
A.
J.
Stephenson,
appointed
him
PDSGW
and
in
1921
upon
the
formation
of
UGLQ,
the
Grand
Master,
M.W.
Bro
Corrie.
conferred
upon
him
the
rank
of
Past
Assistant
Grand
Master
(PAGM),
Corrie
commissioned
him
as
his
Deputy
pro
tetmpore
to
consecrate Allan Lodge #284 on 28th February 1922.
The
Consecration
of
the
District
Grand
Lodge
of
Carpentaria
and
Installation
of
RW
Bro
Mayers
as
District Grand Master were held in Cairns on 24th April 1924.
During
his
eight
year
term
he
consecrated
four
Lodges;
Tully
No.340,
HIghleigh
No.343,
Millaa
No.351, and Palmerston No.372.
R.W.
Bro
Mayers
was
instrumental
in
establishing
the
Masonic
Peace
Memorial
Temple
Fund
for
the
construction
of
the
Cairns
Masonic
Peace
Memorial
Temple.
The
foundation
stone
for
the
Temple
was laid on Armistice Day, 11th November 1934.

Mayers
was
also
instrumental
the
establishment
of
the
Carpentaria
District
Aged
Freemasons, Widows and Orphans Institution.
RW Bro William Henry Johnson Mayers died 24th November 1947 in Clayfield. Brisbane.
